Ruth Garrett ProctorAsheville, NCRuth Garrett Proctor, 92, of Asheville, NC, formerly of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Laurens, SC, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017, after a short illness. She was born on December 27, 1924, in Laurens, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church of Laurens, and was a former member of St. James United Methodist Church of Laurens. She was a solid rock and supported her husband in his career in construction that led them to live in several states over the years, which provided many great experiences for their family. Ruth was a skilled homemaker and cook; she always made each new home organized and comfortable for her family. She was an involved parent for her children, and a loving grandparent for her grandchildren, who were her passion, and for her great-grandchildren. She supported their activities when they were in high school and college, and upheld their careers. Due to the love of the game of golf by her husband and son, Ruth became an avid golf fan. She was also a skilled Canasta player. Ruth was a kind, generous, and compassionate friend to all. She helped care for several of her family members over the years. She was loved by many and appreciated for her sharp mind and sense of humor. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Ralph E. Proctor; her son, Michael R. Proctor; her mother, Lola Tumblin Lindley, and step-father, Melvin W. Lindley, Sr.; her brother, Melvin W. Lindley, Jr. "June," and sister in-law, Bobbie T. Lindley; nephew, Richard W. "Ricky" Lindley; brother-in-law, Charles Knight; special uncle and aunt, Guy and Billie Tumblin, who were second parents to Ruth. She is survived by her daughter and caretaker, Lynn Proctor Gant of Asheville, NC; her sister, Elizabeth L. Knight of Laurens; her grandchildren, Chris S. Gant (Teena); Stephanie G. Rogers (Joe); Dr. Tracy D. Proctor. Her great-grandchildren Kaila Gant (fiancé Cory Wells); Jessica Rogers (fiancé Travis Porshia); Devin Gant (Chris Smith); her great-great granddaughter, Sabray; her extended family, Dannette T. Bickley; Greg B. Bickley; James A. DuTart, Jr.; Lynda D. Monroe; and her very special nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Laurens at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 20, 2017.Memorials may be made to The American Heart & Stroke Assoc., 3535 Pelham Rd. I will always remember her knowledge of golf and how much she loved it. I spent many hours watching and learned to love it more. I will miss going to Lynn's and the welcome and love I received when I arrived.
